It was not until several millennia later that this type of purse was replaced by pockets in clothing, and in the 19th century, wallets. Such a bag was either attached to a man’s coat or worn at the waist. As far back as 5,000 years ago, a “purse” was a small, stitched fabric bag which men used to keep their coins safe.
